Energy Saving Tips

Two iPads on charge, three bedroom lights on, radio on full blast and the TV on mute. That’s a typical household. We all care about our energy usage, or at least want to care about it, but let’s face it, the real wakeup call is when the energy bill rolls in. It’s time to stop fearing that white piece of paper, and embrace greener ways. We have some awesome money saving tips for you below.

Optimise heat delivery

An efficient boiler means greater energy savings. Too often, old boilers are operating at only 60% -70% efficiency, whereas investing in a new boiler can increase this figure to 90% resulting in significant savings.

Take control of your heating

Whatever the age of your boiler, the right controls will let you:

  • Set your heating and hot water to come on and off when you need them
  • Heat only the areas of your home that need heating
  • Set the temperature for each area of your home

Close your curtains

Closing curtains and blinds in the evenings helps keep the heat in your home and means you’re less likely to need to switch the heating on or turn it up further. Remember to open them up during the day though!

Blackle it, don't Google it

You probably haven’t heard of this gem, but Blackle is an energy saving search engine powered by Google. It has a black background,  saving millions of Watt hours.

Spend less time in the shower

Everyone loves singing their heart out in the shower, but maybe it is time to take it elsewhere. Spending one minute less in the shower each day will save £100 off your energy bills each year.

Turn off lights

Short and simple, but easier said than done.  Some good ways to remember turning off your lights are:

  • Play a game and see who turns off lights the most
  • Think of your energy bill (great one, works every time)
  • Put reminders next to switches
