Important News Regarding Wood Chip Supplies

To all owners of woodchip systems

If you buy wood chip fuel from a third party we would urge you to read this communication carefully. It has become apparent in recent months that many wood chip suppliers have been supplying fuel below 20% moisture content and as low as 10-15%.

Excessively dry fuel such as this will lead the boiler to burn too hot causing significant damage. As this fuel is out of specification it will mean that any damage will not be covered under warranty. The manufacturer’s recommendation for dry fuel such as ‘carpentry waste’ is for a flue gas recirculation unit to be fitted. This reduces burn temperatures and protects the boiler.

This problem is caused by fuel suppliers force drying their fuel with biomass heating. Whilst we welcome the wider availability of dry fuel there is clearly an incentive for suppliers to provide very dry fuel because they receive more in RHI than it costs to dry the woodchip. This is an unheard of problem in Europe where there are not the grant incentives to dry wood fuel more than is necessary. Where fuel is dried through normal air seasoning outside this is not a problem.

All woodchip suppliers are required under BSL rules to state the moisture content of their deliveries on their invoices and we would urge you to check this and discuss the specification of fuel being received.

For anyone who is impacted by this and wishes to continue burning fuel below 20% moisture then we would urge you to contact the office on 01984 624811 in order to get a quotation for the fitting of a flue gas recirculation unit. The cost of this is likely to be in the region of £1,500 + VAT, but we can provide a firm quotation once we have assessed the work required. This will rectify the issue completely.
